The Polar Night
During the long months of polar darkness, an artic expedition essential to solving the climate disaster is interrupted by a powerful sun flare.
Rapid mutation in the algal cells accustomed to miniscule light threaten and infect the scientists on board, who do everything they can to make it off the ship alive.

Mixotrophs
Most organisms can either get energy from the sun through their chloroplasts, or from consumption of living cells. Some however, do both.
These rare organisms will CONSUME plant-like cells, making them capable of photosynthesis. Eventually however, they’ll have to eat again.
This horror story takes place on board a research vessel studying these very species during the long period in the arctic where the sun never comes out.
When a sun flare floods these cells with energy previously unknown, rapid mutation affects not only the small algae cells, but the crew that has been drinking the water.
